Enlarged facial pores
Enlarged facial pores are caused by two different skin conditions: Overactive oil glands and a sign of ageing skin.
Oily Skin
Overactive oil glands in oily skin is usually a teen and twenties skin problem. Pores are the openings that surround hair follicles and enable the distribution of natural oils onto the surface of your skin. Pores can become enlarged if they become clogged with dead skin cells, skin oils and bacteria. When these substances are exposed to air, oxygenation takes place and causes them to turn black, forming blackheads.
Ageing Skin
Collagen is the substance that plumps and supports younger skin. As we age our collagen fibres become slack and we loose skin firmness, the pores lose elasticity and become dilated. Collagen is further diminished, and pores enlarge through sun exposure, which is a major factor in enlarged pores.
Outside-in & Inside-out Skin Care
When choosing skin treatments it is important to treat, maintain and balance the skin using skincare products that will give your skin what it needs to heal itself. Feeding the skin with an abundance of skin-identical or skin-repairing ingredients, gives your skin a great diet of nutrients to help repair and maintain great skin health.
Outside-in products
For optimal skin care we need to use products that treat the skin on the outside by maintaining a good shield of protection (our acid mantle or protective barrier) which plays a key role as defender and gatekeeper, keeping bacteria and fungal infections at bay and helping prevent blackheads and acne.
For the best results mild exfoliation should be part of a skin care regimen, to help keep the top layer of skin from getting too thick with dead skin cells. If someone suffers from breakouts, exfoliation is a key step in their home skincare routine. People with acne prone or oily skin conditions especially need to slough off the dead skin cells, so that they don’t clog the pores. Regular exfoliation is the key to keeping pores unclogged.
Combating enlarged pores with a gentle enzyme, AHA cleanser and exfoliating AHA pore refining serum will help remove dead skin cells and reveal fresh new skin and a smooth texture. Alpha hydroxy acids are naturally found in fruits and milk and include glycolic, citric, lactic, malic and tartaric acids. They reduce the appearance of enlarged pores with their deep pore cleaning ability and loosen the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells on the skins surface. Skin texture, colour and vibrancy will be revived and refreshed. When used correctly in low doses they help restore skin health and maintain a good protective barrier.
Inside-out products
As we age our skin cell turnover rate slows down. Cell turnover is the process by which our skin produces new skin cells which travel from the lowest layer of the epidermis to the top layer and then shed off the skin. This is what keeps dead cells from building up on the skin’s surface. That means that as we age, the top layer of the skin becomes dull and we lose our natural “glow” factor. Treatment serums containing antioxidants and vitamin A help stimulate collagen production, which helps tighten and shrink pore size, normalise overactive oil glands and help reverse signs of sun damage and ageing.
Serums that contain a special liposomal delivery system help transport skin nutrients into the deeper layers of the skin (dermis) where they need to work to have an effect on living skin cells. Vitamin A serums work as the best anti-ageing and internal ‘exfoliators’ in skin care, by working from the inside out. They speed up skin cell turnover, which means that every skin cell moves from the lower skin layer (Basal layer) to the top layer (Stratum Corneum) every 28 to 30 days keeping natural skin function optimally healthy. The serum helps normalise oil production, increases the rate of wound healing (pimples/acne), help reduce wrinkles and increases blood flow to the surface of the skin.
